DEFINITION AND DESCRIPTION

Open Content

A broad term that covers a wider range of resources and materials made available openly on the web. It implies open licencing to enable re-use, revise, remix and re-distribute (the 4Rs). Open content is not defined by it's intended use and covers raw data, research materials, learning and teaching materials and informational resources.

There are 'degrees of openness' which can be reflected in a wide range of licences so content may be partially open or fully open. The concept of Openness also implies that it is 'free at the point of use' thereby supporting access for an altruistic public good.

Open content for learning and teaching is usually described as an Open Educational Resources (OER).
