Brief Description and URLs

WordPress blog framework

http://politicsinspires.org/

NB: The release of the blog posts is not part of the project; the project focuses on the delivery platform and the provision of additional material around the blog posts

Tools

All tools/code/plugins created by this project are available at http://openspires.oucs.ox.ac.uk/triton/resources/

Podcasts feeder – this plugin brings in feeds of Oxford’s audio and video content and then selects the podcast most relevant to the blog post currently being read.

Newsfeed – this brings in several RSS feeds from various newspapers and media sources featuring subject-specific content

‘Advertising’ space area - one space on the front page is given over to advertising relevant events or news items: it currently uses RSS feeds from the DPIR and POLIS websites to feature Department news.

Picture picker - It’s not easy to get a picture into a WordPress post; at minimum a file has to be uploaded. The picture picker allows a contributor to search Flickr for pictures (CC-BY licence only) and then add an attributed version to the blog post directly.

Categories/tags - a slight change was made to the default category widget code (a new widget created) to allow for more control over the display of categories (such as how many posts per category)

Profiles – Site visitors wanted an article to come with provenance, especially of the post’s author. Academic staff often maintain profiles in multiple locations so work has taken place to reuse this content where possible.

Export PDF - Work has taken place to look at how content from the site can be converted into other forms. In doing so, support for increased delivery options and download (offline access) could be supported.

Registration process - The registration process for the site has been developed to include information on licensing and various legal policies. It has also been automated and secured with the aim of being as simple as possible for people to use.

Dynamic collection ‘like’ tool - The dynamic collection tool allows an author to enter a set of keywords which the plugin then turns into WordPress content by searching RSS Feeds and URLs selected by an administrator. The content the plugin returns can also be ‘liked’ by visitors to the site, and so popular content is highlighted.

Aggregated OER and curated sets of OER

Dynamic collections – for four main categories (political theory, comparative government, international relations, and European politics and society) collections of subject-relevant educational material are dynamically brought into the site:

Reusable learning material – content from OER sites all licensed for reuse

Images - CC-BY licensed images from Flickr

Podcasts – audio and video from subject-relevant collections, some of which may be licensed for reuse

Blogs – collections of topic-relevant posts from other blog sites, some of which may be licensed for reuse

An example is shown here http://politicsinspires.org/oer/political-theory/

Learning path creator - a new bookmarking tool which allows registered users to bookmark in their browser any online resource and deposit this within the blog framework. This bookmark approach quickly builds new groups of quality-controlled, curated OER which provide a structured list or learning pathway around a thematic topic. An example is shown here

http://politicsinspires.org/learning-path/london-riots/

Videos to show how to install and use the tool are shown here
